The New River originates near Blowing Rock, NC and meanders north through Virginia into West Virginia. The New is dammed near Hinton, WV to form Bluestone Lake. Once released, the New is strengthened by the Greenbrier River to flow through the New River Gorge National Park as the largest volume whitewater run in the eastern U.S. The river is divided into 2 parts. The Upper New is rated up to Class 3 and is perfect for beginners, float trips or people who just want to kick back and relax, yet still want to experience the thrill of a good hit. The Lower New is one of the finest whitewater runs in the world! The Lower's 15 mile run starts off relatively easy the first 9 miles, then picks up to Class 5 intensity the remaining 6 miles with huge breaking waves and massive hydraulics! The Lower New ends in the shadow of the New River Gorge Bridge, the world's longest span, steel arch bridge and 2nd highest bridge in the world. I'm seated right-front in all pictures.

From water to road surface, the New River Gorge Bridge soars over 800 feet! On the 3rd weekend in October, the 2 northbound lanes are closed and pedestrians are allowed on the bridge to celebrate Bridge Day. Street vendors line the bridge and, as a part of the festivities, BASE jumpers dive over the edge to land on the river bank far below! With the brilliant autumn colors as a backdrop, Bridge Day is a beautiful spectacle! Here is a more detailed view of the bridge's structure (61K).
